Notes on a Website

I’ve worked on many great projects, but also some terrible ones. In an attempt to understand what makes a good or bad project I started writing lists. These lists have evolved into Notes on a Website, a guide for clients, designers, developers or anyone interested in creating websites.

Client Sites

  • VOCAL

    Launched:

A full redesign for a vital support service in Edinburgh, focused on making information easy to find and accessible to all. Working within a tight budget, we transitioned the site to WordPress Blocks and prioritised usability, legibility, and WCAG accessibility. The result is a clean, intuitive site that’s easier for carers to navigate—delivered with a pro bono contribution to help make it happen.

We’ve worked with Richard for many years and highly recommend his services. Beyond his strong technical skills, Richard takes the time to truly understand your audience, brand, and vision. He’s consistently responsive, professional, and thoughtful in his approach and we’ve been very pleased with the results he’s delivered for VOCAL.”

  • Fitz’s Atlas

    Launched:

A specialist resource for professionals in the coatings industry, Fitz’s Atlas provides trusted handbooks and training tools across print and digital. Working from supplied designs, I developed a bespoke WordPress theme tailored to the content—creating a clean, responsive site that makes technical information easy to access across devices.

Working with Richard is always a pleasure. From my initial design concepts, he helps guide each project through development—offering smart, practical solutions that enhance the site without compromising the creative vision.”

  • The Scottish Gallery

    Launched:

One of Edinburgh’s most established galleries, The Scottish Gallery needed a refreshed website that did justice to its artists and archive. I took over an underperforming WordPress build from another agency and reworked the design, layout, and functionality—resolving long-standing issues and restoring client confidence. The result is a refined, user-friendly site that supports both exhibition promotion and online sales.

Richard has not only redesigned our website, but has managed to unravel technical issues quickly and effectively. His ability to combine user experience with design is invaluable.”

  • Summerhall – Festival ’24

    Launched:

A new WordPress site to support Summerhall’s 2024 Festival programme—home to one of Edinburgh’s most vibrant Fringe venues. The build integrates with Eventotron to sync event listings directly from the Fringe box office, ensuring up-to-date event info with minimal admin. Designed for clarity, performance, and easy navigation during one of the busiest arts seasons of the year.

  • Climb Scotland

    Launched:

When their legacy CMS reached end-of-life, ClimbScotland needed a quick rebuild of their website. Migrating to WordPress presented an opportunity refresh the design and improved usability across devices. The result is a faster, cleaner experience that supports their mission to grow participation in climbing across Scotland.

We needed to migrate and refresh the ClimbScotland website quickly, and Richard helped make it a smooth process. We now have a new great looking site which is easier to navigate and update, and are getting more visitors and engagement as a result.
