Backups

Information about website and database backups, retention policies, recovery options, and independent backups.

Backups are essential for protecting websites, email accounts, documents, and business data against accidental deletion, hardware failure, corruption, security incidents, or service disruption.

While automated server backups provide additional protection, independent backups are strongly recommended for important or business-critical data.

Website & Hosting Backups

Websites and databases hosted by Ctrl-X Digital Ltd are backed up regularly to provide additional resilience and recovery options.

Recent backups are typically retained more frequently, with older backups retained on a reduced schedule.

While reasonable efforts are made to maintain reliable backups and recovery procedures, restoration cannot be guaranteed and clients remain responsible for maintaining independent backups of critical data and content.

Cloud Storage

Cloud storage provides a simple and reliable way to protect documents, media, and business files.

Services such as:

  • Google Drive
  • Dropbox
  • iCloud Drive
  • Microsoft OneDrive

can automatically synchronise files between devices and maintain copies in secure online storage, helping reduce the risk of data loss caused by hardware failure or accidental deletion.

External Hard Drives

External hard drives provide an additional offline backup option, particularly useful for:

  • large files
  • photography and video
  • archived projects
  • limited internet connections

Keeping at least one backup disconnected from day-to-day systems can provide additional protection against ransomware or account compromise.

System & Device Backups

Full system or device backups are recommended for business-critical systems or environments that would be difficult to rebuild quickly.

These backups may include:

  • operating systems
  • applications
  • local email archives
  • documents and media
  • website files and databases

Backups may be stored:

  • on external drives
  • on network-attached storage (NAS)
  • within secure cloud backup platforms

Backup Retention & Recovery

Backup retention policies vary depending on the platform, hosting environment, and service configuration.

Backups are intended to provide additional recovery options rather than permanent archiving.

Clients should ensure that:

  • important files are retained independently
  • critical records are archived appropriately
  • historic data required for legal or operational purposes is stored securely

Important Notes

No backup system can guarantee complete protection against every failure scenario, cyber incident, or third-party outage.

Clients remain responsible for:

  • reviewing critical data regularly
  • maintaining appropriate independent backups
  • ensuring important records are retained securely
  • verifying that backup arrangements meet their own operational and compliance requirements
